Leadership that feels like you

You do not need to become louder to become a better leader

Leadership is not about having all the answers, controlling every detail or being the most forceful person in the room.

It is about understanding yourself, building trust and helping other people perform at their best. If you are thoughtful, quiet or naturally private, those qualities do not count against you. With greater self-awareness and a few practical tools, they can become real strengths.

Does this sound familiar?

Support for the challenges that come with leading for the first time

  • You have been promoted and suddenly feel pressure to prove yourself.
  • You worry that your natural style is not confident or authoritative enough.
  • You find delegation difficult and end up trying to do everything yourself.
  • You avoid difficult conversations or replay them afterwards.
  • You need to speak or present clearly when the pressure is on.
  • You are not yet a formal manager but want to prepare for leadership.
Quiet confidence

Lead with confidence without putting on a professional persona

Many new leaders think they need to look certain, sound tough or keep their doubts hidden. That pressure can lead to micromanagement, poor communication and a version of leadership that feels exhausting to maintain. Chris explores this further in his guide to stepping into leadership for the first time.

Good leadership can be calm, thoughtful and understated. Humility, approachability, listening and asking for advice are not weaknesses. Used well, they help people trust you and want to work with you.

New and aspiring leaders developing confidence through leadership coaching in Harrogate
Coaching in practice

Helping a thoughtful young candidate perform when it mattered

A young man preparing for a demanding Army officer selection process needed to deliver a five-minute presentation about himself. He was capable and thoughtful, but naturally private and uncomfortable speaking about his own achievements.

With only a short time before the assessment, our sessions were deliberately practical. We worked on structure, posture, eye contact, delivery and using humour naturally. We also explored how he could talk about himself honestly without feeling as though he was performing a part.

The outcome

He passed the selection process.

The wider lesson applies far beyond one presentation: confidence does not have to mean becoming a different person. It grows when you understand what you want to say, practise how to say it and trust your own style.

Frequently asked questions

Leadership coaching questions

Who is this leadership coaching for?

It is designed for new managers, first-time leaders, aspiring leaders and early-career professionals who want to feel more confident and effective when working with other people. Your job title matters less than the situation you are facing and your willingness to work on it.

Do I need to be in a management role already?

No. Coaching can help you prepare before your first formal leadership role, support you through a promotion or help you develop leadership skills within your current work.

Can we meet face to face in Harrogate?

Yes. Face-to-face coaching is available in Harrogate and may also be possible elsewhere in Yorkshire by arrangement. Online sessions are available too.

How many coaching sessions will I need?

It depends on your goal and starting point. Some people need support with one immediate challenge, while deeper leadership development takes longer. Chris generally recommends at least three sessions and will discuss this honestly during your free call.

Is everything we discuss confidential?

Yes. Sessions provide a confidential, relaxed and non-judgemental place to discuss what is really happening and decide what you want to do next.

What is the difference between coaching and mentoring?

Coaching helps you think clearly, identify your own goals and build a plan. Where Chris has relevant first-hand experience, he may also offer mentoring and practical observations. The focus remains on your situation, your decisions and your progress.
